Why we created ScentSafe™

At Clear Mountain Provisions, we’ve always believed that the things we bring into our homes and the things we create with our own hands should reflect our values. Thoughtfulness. Transparency. A genuine care for the earth and those we share it with.

For many, candles are deeply personal. They scent our spaces, soften our moods, and mark the quiet moments we cherish. As we began this journey, we discovered that there were few clear answers when it came to what candles are actually made of. Ingredient lists were vague or missing. Labels used words like “natural” or “clean” without explanation. And when we dug deeper, we found that there was little regulation guiding what should - or shouldn’t - go into a candle.

That realization is what led us here.

ScentSafe™ is our way of doing better. It’s our in-house standard for candle safety and sustainability. Not a marketing term, but a framework built with care - born from curiosity, research, and a deep belief that small choices can shape a more honest, healthier world.

What we found was a missing standard.

We looked for answers. For something - anything - that could tell us which candles were truly safe. We found clever branding and vague claims. But no real standard.

In the U.S., candle safety standards largely focus on how a candle burns: how tall the flame is, whether the container gets too hot, or if a wick might tip. These are important protections, and they come from organizations like ASTM International and the Consumer Product Safety Commission. Some global fragrance manufacturers and distributors like CandleScience follow voluntary IFRA guidance.

But when it comes to the materials inside a candle - the fragrance, the wax, the additives - there is no legally required standard. Manufacturers are not required to disclose ingredients. Fragrance formulations are considered proprietary. And many candles still contain petroleum-based waxes, synthetic dyes, or fragrance ingredients linked to hormone disruption, respiratory irritation, or other health concerns.

We found that even when brands wanted to do better, there wasn’t a clear path to follow.

What’s Missing?

No required or industry-standard framework in the U.S. governs the safety of candle ingredients for human or environmental health.

No regulation mandates disclosing ingredients, toxicant exclusions, sourcing practices, or sustainability metrics for wax, wicks, or fragrances.

The National Candle Association encourages safe practices but does not provide a formalized safety certification like ScentSafe™.

The FDA does not regulate candles unless therapeutic claims are made.

A different path forward.

This is where ScentSafe™ comes in.

We created this standard as a quiet act of accountability. A promise that everything we pour reflects a deeper level of care. Every ingredient we use has been chosen not just for how it smells or looks - but for how it impacts the air, the earth, and the people we serve.

We don’t rely on buzzwords.

We rely on process.

And it starts long before wax hits the pot.

Why it matters.

ScentSafe™ isn’t about creating fear, gatekeeping, or a marketing buzzword. It’s about empowering makers just like us to do better for customers just like you.

We don’t want to scare anyone away from lighting a candle, or enjoying any scented products. We want to give you the clarity and peace of mind to enjoy it fully. To know that the soft scent drifting through your living room was chosen with care. That the wax burning on your windowsill didn’t come from a refinery. That what you’re breathing in was thoughtfully considered.

This is about trust.

It’s about honesty.

And it’s about crafting something that feels as good as it smells.

We launched ScentSafe™ not just to raise the bar, but to set it. As the first brand to meet this standard, Clear Mountain Provisions continues to lead by example in clean candle making.

Today and What Comes Next

ScentSafe™ began as a personal standard. But we believe in sharing what works. In the seasons ahead, we plan to expand this program - offering certification and guidance to other small-batch makers who want to follow this path. Because we know we’re not alone in wanting better.

Until then, we’ll keep doing what we’ve always done: asking more questions, refining our process, and making every decision with the bigger picture in mind.

This year, we are deepening our commitments to our own standard:

  • Partnering with small local farms and mission-aligned makers to improve our products and offerings.
  • Shrinking our waste stream and rethinking our supply chains.
  • Offsetting our carbon footprint through purchases of carbon credits where changes are not feasible.
  • Revamping our shipping and packaging standards to further reduce environmental impact.

A candle should feel like home.

ScentSafe™ is our way of honoring the relationship between people and place.

It’s our invitation to slow down, breathe deeply, and make choices that align with what matters most.

We don’t have all the answers.

But we know how to begin—with curiosity, with care, and with a promise to do what’s right, even when it’s harder.
